“Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room,” at least according to Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. This is why brand-building is so important.

If you are starting a new business, or re-branding an existing one, read on. We are sharing the top 5 brand building tips for businesses below.

Tip 1 – Know Your Why!

You have a passion, maybe it is for making widgets, maybe it is for teaching yoga. Either way, you starting your own company to do what you love. We get it. Now, take that passion and put it into words, then a visual, then a customer experience – now you have your brand.

Tip 2 – Know Your Customer, Make Sure Your Brand Speaks to Them.

This is a case of the chicken and the egg. Your brand needs to speak to your customers, so create your brand (with your why) and find your customers. OR, if you have customers, or know your target audience, design your brand around them. Either way, your brand has to speak to the people you are trying to reach.

Don’t forget to think about the color of your logos. Color psychology dates back to the Egyptians, when they noticed color influenced moods. Choose the colors that speak to your why and core message.

Tip 3 -Analyze, Analyze, Analyze

You need to know everything about your customers and the competition. One of the most common analysis for your competitors is a S.W.O.T. analysis. S.W.O.T. stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Take 3 of your biggest competitors and write out their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Be specific in your analysis, the more detail you provide, the easier it is to identify where your brand fits in comparison. Now you can set yourself apart from them.

Tip 4 – Create a Brand Voice and Use It!

Your communication creates your brand voice. It can be created with a thought or will be created on the fly. You want to have a clear and consistent brand voice throughout all your company’s communication.

Part of your brand voice is also your messages. Make sure your messages match your voice. In combination, it is what and how you say things in your marketing material.

Tip 5 – Brand-Building – Takes Your Customers on a Journey

Your brand experience should take your customers on a journey through the sales experience. This is the final part of your branding.

Don’t Forget Your Logo

All your branding starts with a logo. The logo should be created through a process. This process takes into account all of your branding as well as graphic design.
