HOW TO GET A WEBSITE: STEP BY STEP

FIND THE RIGHT NAME

Finding the right name for a website can be difficult, and will most likely take a lot of time and brain storming. If you already have a company or organization in place the domain name may already be taken, and having an idea without a name is equally frustrating.

The first thing you need to do is decide what it is you want from your site. Are you looking to get a lot of hits from search engines, or will most of your viewers be given the site name in context (e.g. business cards & references)? You should also keep it short and sweet, that way it is easier to remember. People remembering your site name is the most important thing for your sites success. Ideally, you'll be able to get the exact name you want; but more realistically, you will have to select an alternate that comes close.

Search Engines.....

If you are looking to advertise your idea to the world rather than getting viewers by reference, you should keep a few things in mind.

  • Search engines consider the words in your domain name, so you should probably have a name that reflects what you do.
  • As you come up with names you should use key terms from those names in search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.) to see what comes up first. If you find the results to be very similar to your domain name, you should consider other alternatives to prevent your potential customers from finding your competition first.

Referenced Sites.....

A site that is spread more by word of mouth will often be presented in context, meaning your domain name does not necessarily have to describe what your site does. This allows you a lot more freedom and enables you to use names only remotely connected with the sites concept.

  • Your primary goal should be a name that is short, simple, and memorable. You want people to be able to remember the name off the bat, so they share it with others without having to go looking for it themselves.
  • You should not stray so far from the original concept that the domain name doesn't make sense at all; keep it close to the topic, and try to make it clever. Often, the best domain name is one that makes a person think of how you derived it. The more time your site is on someone's mind the better.

REGISTER THE DOMAIN NAME YOU WANT

Once you have decided on a website name and checked to see if it is available, the next step is to register the domain with a registrar. It's kind of like getting a phone number assigned to you without actually having a phone company (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, etc.) supply you with service. The idea is to save the domain name ("phone number") so no one else can use it.

There are a number of registrars that offer these services, most of which are far too expensive. We recommend a place called NexusDomains, because they don't try to trick you into a bunch of services you don't need. They do however still offer many of these services such as ID PROTECT, POP EMAIL PAKS, SSL SECURITY CERTIFICATES, etc. The only difference is they don't just automatically add it to your bill and hope you don't notice it. They also allow you to register for 1 year at a time, whereas some other companies require a minimum of 3 years (all of which is paid up front).

PICK A HOSTING PLAN

A host is simply a company that maintains web servers (glorified computers) to keep the information for your site. This way it is available to all users 24/7, it's backed up incase of hackers or a power outage, and in the case something does go wrong it is corrected quickly.

Selecting a hosting plan can be intimidating when you see all of the options; but don't worry, it is not nearly as daunting a task as you might think. People often buy more than they need with their hosting plans, because they want the best of the best and don't want to risk getting something that won't do what they need.

As you shop for hosting you should ask yourself a few questions first:

  • What should my site to be able to do?
  • Should it interact with the end user (dynamic)?
  • Or is it for informational purposes (static)?
  • Do I want to have a web based content management system (CMS) for multiple administrative users?
  • What if I want to upgrade my plan? Will it cost extra to switch?
  • How much traffic do I expect?

Here are a few options to start:

HostNexus
GoDaddy
JustHost

MAP YOUR SITE OUT

A sitemap is one of the most important tools for your website, because it will help web crawlers find pages deep within your site. Web crawlers are sent out by search engines like Google & Yahoo to find and navigate your site.

What may be organized to you can be very confusing to others. Site maps help avoid confusion and general navigation issues for your end user.

Aside from helping your users and the search engines, maping out your site in advance is critical so you or your designer have something concrete to go by as you develop pages. It also helps when you want to make additions to your site after it's up and running.

SELECT LAYOUT AND DESIGN TYPES

There are a lot of intricate layouts & designs out there, but while you browse through designs & templates keep in mind that fancy is not always good. Many times an intricate and flashy site can be intimidating to a user. You should first consider what your end users will be looking for from your site.

That is not to say your site can't be cutting edge and do well at the same time, but one good comparison would be Google & Yahoo. Look at each of their sites and see which one is flashier.

By the look of the pages themselves you may never have guessed that Google holds over 85% of the market, but that is exactly the case.

Users don't want too much going on on a web page, otherwise it is too easy to get lost. Most people that view your site will probably be looking for something specific, so make it easy to find. If you have a lot of services, the navigation of your site will be the most critical aspect. If you don't have a lot to give, that doesn't mean you have to make up with flare.

Allmywebneeds.com offers web design services at reasonable prices, so you get more for less. Our web specialists are easy to talk to and always look forward to helping people get online.
